Waters third in Coolum

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

The Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing team has celebrated dual podiums this weekend, albeit on different sides of the globe.

Todd Waters recorded his second consecutive Pro Open podium, finishing third at the final round of the MX Nationals in Coolum today while teammate Josh Sheehan, on the opposite side of the globe, was awarded the bronze medal for ‘Best Trick’ at the Olympics of Actions Sports – X-Games.

Sheehan, who was only given his official invitation to compete the day before the event, pulled off a perfect double backflip.

While only contesting the final four rounds of the 2011 MX Nationals due to injury, Todd Waters graced the podium twice and ended the season sitting eleventh in the championship standings.

“Things didn’t really go my way in the first two races today,” Waters said. “We made some changes to the bike before the final two races and they made a big difference, I was able to push a lot harder into the corners.

“My race fitness is really improving and that showed in the last race. While everyone else seemed to be fading I was able to charge through from seventh to second.

“I have finished the motocross season on a good note but I am really looking forward to Supercross and starting the season with my team, at the beginning, not midway through,” he added.

Cheyne Boyd endured a frustrating day; the Victorian finished the first two motos fifth and fourth and looked a certainty for the podium before an uncharacteristic rear brake problem thwarted his chances in the final back-to-back races.

Boyd, who ended the day 11th after missing the final race still finished the season sitting fifth in the Pro Open Championship standings.

“It was certainly not the end to the season I was aiming for,” Boyd lamented. “There wasn’t much I could do, the rear brake went going into a corner on the opening lap of the third race.

“I couldn’t stop, I hit a few riders and went down then rode the race with no rear brake.

“It was really disappointing as I easily had a podium and I wanted nothing more than to reward the team, Honda, Thor, CUB and all my personal sponsors with a podium finish,” Boyd concluded.

Teammate Michael Phillips who was originally called in to substitute for Todd Waters while he was injured ended his season eighth for the round and sixth in the championship.

“The first two races weren’t great,” Phillips explained. “I had a couple of washouts and finished 11th and 10th.

“I finished the final two races 7th and 6th which was a much better result but I didn’t feel like I really got into the groove today.

“Sixth overall in the championship standings after getting the late call up is not a bad result. I will now head home for a break and try and work out a deal to come back to Australia for Supercross,” Phillips said.

The Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing team will take a short break before they begin testing for the impending Supercross season.
